AAMT has received a further letter this month from the Hon Sussan Ley, Minister for Health, in relation to the PHIR outcomes. The Minister advises that the Report’s findings are currently being considered and a decision will be announced in due course. This leaves Private Health Insurers free to determine their rebateable products and limits, fostering competition between fund providers to compete for consumer loyalty. The Minister also advises that preferred provider schemes practiced by funds will remain under the control of funds, allowing them to determine their criteria and standards for their health providers.

Of note the Minister has advised of two taskforces currently reviewing the Medicare Benefits Schedule and a Primary Health Care Advisory Group. The aim is to list services which reflect contemporary clinical best practice, aligning these with clinical evidence . AAMT will be watching these reforms with interest and will keep members advised as to any outcomes that affect the industry. Further information about the reforms can be found at the following links.
